Introduction

“Give me a hundred men who fear nothing but God and hate nothing but sin and I will shake the world”.
- John Wesley

Imagine if you could reach out and touch countless members of your community – just for a moment – showing them God’s love. Imagine if you could help a group of young people grow – ethically, emotionally and spiritually. Imagine if you could show them, for an instant, what the world could be like if we truly loved our neighbours.

You might not shake the whole world, but you can shake your corner of it, and you don’t need a hundred people to get started.

For several years, a group of churches in Adelaide have aimed to impact their local communities through a week-long community service event called “Big Week Out”. The event sees young people – normally in secondary school, led by young adults – going out into local communities to perform acts of service – not for payment or for praise, but to show people that they are loved.

This manual is our best effort to explain how to run a similar project. You don’t have to call it “Big Week Out”. In fact, you can change whatever you like to suit the needs of your project and your area. However, we hope that this manual will be a useful starting point - and an occasional roadmap – for your project’s journey.

May you shake your corner of the world.
